New TLDs Launch Phases
So you know when you can get your domains, here's an explanation of the different phases of each TLD launch.
Sunrise - Usually 30-60 Days
Sunrise phase is the first step toward a new TLD launch. In Sunrise, trademark owners claim their domains before they're publicly available. Domains contested by multiple trademark owners typically go to auction.
Landrush - Usually 30 Days
Landrush is the first launch phase open to the public. Anybody can claim domains during Landrush so long as it wasn't already registered during Sunrise. Domains in Landrush typically cost more to register with contested domains going to auction.
General Availability - Official Launch
General Availability is the final phase of a TLD launch. This is when the public can purchase all of a TLD's available domain names. In General Availability, names are usually first-come-first-serve, but some TLDs may have a pre-order system in place before General Availability opens.
Why are new domain extensions being introduced?
Today, it's hard for businesses and individuals to find domains that are both relevant and available. With hundreds of new domain extensions like .guru, .photography, .dance, .club, .clothing and many more being introduced, it will be much easier to find the right domain for your website.
How does the preregistration process work?
Preregistration lets you place an order for a domain before its made available to the general public. Once placed, the moment the domain becomes available, we attempt to purchase it on your behalf. In case the domain is not available, your money is refunded.
When will the new domain extensions become available?
The new extensions will become available for purchase over the course of the next 12-14 months. Use our pre-registration service to ensure that you get your domain as soon as it becomes available.
What's Next?
ICANN, the organization overseeing the new TLDs program, has already been reviewing new TLDs applications since Q2 of 2013. This means new TLDs will start to roll out as soon as their applications are approved.
